A Hearth to Hearth
Wrapping up September and moving into October at the Hearth.
Not much has gotten done around the Hearth at all it’s been so hot. A great thing happened this month we did happen to get 131 eggs from our hens this last month. That’s more than double from the month before. Of this year’s hens, the two Buff Orpington lay almost every day. They are now 7 months old. Lady is a year and a half now and has been very consistent and giving me one egg every other day. The heat affected egg production twice, which is not too bad for August. I think I want to add 2 or 3 more laying hens next year. I want to be able to produce enough eggs that the hens pay for their feed.
Speaking of planning
Finally, the grass is growing back where they tore up my yard to install a French Drain and a new septic field. I was so distressed over this because I will not be able to use my garden plot to grow my vegetables because they used it for the new drain field. I will have to change plans and make the front yard be the veggie garden. We lost a couple of flower beds also, just bulldozed right over them. This next year I want to add some miniature fruit trees. I need to do some research I want them to be disease resistant and they need to work for 7a zone. This is a big part of homesteading planning for the future needs of the family.
Virtual Craft Party
The Virtual Craft Party’s Project was coming together very quickly. I choose to modify the pattern to make a Pumpkin Wreath instead of the Jack Skellington Wreath. He is going to look really cute on the door this month. I had to stop in the middle of last months Virtual Craft Party’s Project. Money got a little tight after some health problems. I will be finishing it and picking a new project for October soon.
Oh, our Hearth got a kitten.
He was only 5 weeks when we got him. I know that is too young but if we did not offer him a home they were going to dump him at the pound. This baby is a small bundle of energy and when we are gone or asleep he is in a large crate. Brave is a good way to describe him as he has become a menace to the dogs, chews, and bounces at them not caring that they could sniff him up. His name is Budda, he is a siamese mixup.
Well, here is hoping for a healthy happy month from our family to yours for October.
